First Fly Fishing School Session: An Introduction to Entomology and Aquatic Insects
At the first session of the Fly Fishing School, organized by the Novi val Blagaj Youth Club in partnership with USR Neretva 1933, we began with the basics of entomology, one of the most important fields for understanding fly fishing. The children had the opportunity to learn more about aquatic insects—flies found in rivers and streams—which represent the primary food source for fish.
Through a practical and educational approach, participants learned to recognize different types of larvae, nymphs, and adult insects, as well as their role in the aquatic ecosystem. Special emphasis was placed on understanding the importance of knowing these insects when choosing the right artificial fly.
The session was marked by curiosity, questions, and active participation, with children showing great interest and a strong willingness to learn. This laid a solid foundation for future sessions and further development in fly fishing, with a special focus on river conservation and respect for nature.
This activity was carried out as part of the Together for Rivers / United for Rivers initiative, which brings together organizations and communities across Southeast Europe with the goal of protecting and
preserving our rivers.
