January 2020. was the warmest month in history

In January, the average temperature on the planet exceeded 0.03 degrees Celsius compared to the January 2016 temperature, which was the warmest month in January so far and was 0.77 degrees Celsius warmer than the month of January from the 1981- 2010, according to a statement from the European Climate Change Service Copernicus.

In part of northeastern Europe, Scandinavia and part of Russia, the difference even exceeded six degrees Celsius more than in the period 1981-2020. Due to greenhouse gas emissions from human activities, the planet is already one degree Celsius warmer than in the pre-industrial era, with different consequences worldwide, such as those marking 2019, extremely intense fires in Australia or periods of high heat during summers in the Northern Hemisphere.

The 2015 Paris Agreement provides for warming to be limited to between two and 1.5 degrees Celsius, however, even though some 200 signatory countries are honoring their commitments to reduce greenhouse gas, warming could exceed three degrees Celsius.
